‘Bear’ Magazine Offers to Honor Subscriptions to Out-of-Print Competitor

LAS VEGAS—Subscribers who were disappointed when the gay adult magazine 100% Beef ceased publication of its print edition may apply to have their subscriptions fulfilled by competitor Bear magazine.

Bear publisher Bear Omnimedia announced the offer in a statement dated July 28, following 100% Beef’s mid-July move to web-only distribution. According to Bear Editor in Chief Steven Wolfe, upon verification, subscribers to the rival publication may receive a free copy of Bear #71. In addition, 100% Beef subscribers will be able to receive future copies of Bear at cost plus postage, Wolfe said.

“I applaud your decision to attempt to maintain a webzine to mitigate damages to subscribers, but there is nothing like the portability and convenience of a real, tangible, full-color magazine stuffed with hot images of bearded men,” Wolfe wrote in a letter to 100% Beef owner and editor Scott McGillivray. “While some of your subscribers will roll with this punch, many will feel bitterly disappointed or even betrayed that what they bought will not be delivered.”

Bear Omnimedia also offered to accommodate all 100% Beef advertisers at undisclosed promotional rates.

According to Wolfe, 100% Beef’s withdrawal from the newsstand market leaves Bear the only print magazine dedicated to hirsute, beefy men. Published quarterly in full color, each issue of Bear includes a foldout “Bear Player” centerfold.

The Bear Omnimedia offer expires July 31.
