Happy 60th Birthday!
... was first published on this date in 1949. According to Wikipedia, by 1989, it had been translated into 65 languages — more languages than any other book by a single author. It gave us the terms "Orwellian," "doublethink," "anti-sex league," "groupthink," "Big Brother," "Thought Police" and "thoughtcrime."

BTW, seeing the movie (either version) doesn't count; there's no way the impact of this titan of literature can be conveyed on the screen.
