LOS ANGELES - Not the Bradys XXX director Will Ryder ran into the son of 'Brady Bunch' creator Sherwood Schwartz at a recent performance of 'A Very Brady Musical' at Theatre West in Los Angeles.
Lloyd J. Schwartz wrote and directed the musical tribute to the popular sitcom and also worked as a dialogue coach on the original series. Spotting Schwartz in the audience, Ryder couldn't pass up the chance to mention the tres not-Brady porn parody.
"I wanted to really ease into the subject nice and smooth if that was possible," said Ryder. "I figured he must have heard about it and I was quite curious."
According to Ryder, Schwartz confirmed that he had seen tabloid TV news reports about the XXX spoof and "didn't seem to object too much."
Still, Ryder said, the sitcom scion was "clearly uncomfortable" with the subject of porn.
"I really wasn't intending to bring it up but [Schwartz's] portrayal of the Brady Bunch live on stage was filled with sexual innuendo and a fabulous sense of humor that really took the Bradys to places you'd never dream of seeing on TV, including Marcia getting arrested for being a hooker," Ryder laughed. "Plus, there's a scene where Greg buys a car adorned with wood paneling and his brothers and sisters join him in singing, 'I've got a woody...He's got a woody...' That was funny as hell."
Schwartz made one comment that Ryder sees as emblematic of the way outsiders view the adult industry.
"He said he didn't really have a problem as long as no girls were forced into performing in the movie," Ryder said. "That really blew my mind, and I assured him that nobody was forced."
When Schwartz asked how Ryder knew that no human trafficking was involved in the porno 'Bunch,' Ryder 'fessed up to directing the flick.
"That was the bombshell that ended the conversation," Ryder said. "He politely told me thanks for coming and left me standing there with my date, who ironically is a 'Not the Bradys' cast member [Veronique Vega] -- but I didn't dare mention that."
