PELHAM, Ala.—Sylvester Stallone was briefly a porn star and Whoopi Goldberg was rumored to have been a prostitute, but their later careers didn't suffer from their connection with sex work. Sadly, however, former adult star and sex worker Candye Kane's past has recently come back to haunt her, as the Shelby Blues & BBQ Festival, which had contracted with her to perform at the show on October 1, has now rescinded the offer because the singer has never denied her sexual adventurism.
"The Shelby Chamber of Commerce has not only cancelled my appearance at the Shelby Blues fest but now they are lying and saying I was never booked!!" Kane wrote on her Facebook page, which also reproduces the contract she had signed with the festival. "My agent Tina Terry at Piedmont Talent was told by telephone conversation with Karla from the blues society that I was being cancelled specifically because of my background as a gay/sexwork activist and my controversial career choices made more than thirty years ago and the accessibility of such information on the internet."
Kane also reproduced the URLs the festival had used to sell tickets for Kane's performances.
"It is disappointing and insulting enough to be judged by my actions of over 30 years ago and not judged for my music," Kane wrote to the show's producers, "but I should think if you are going to blatantly judge me and cancel my appearance that the Shelby Chamber of Commerce should at least own up to their decision and be honest about the reasons why."
Kane's career in music has been a storied one. A USC junior opera program drop-out in 1976, Kane caught the attention of Epic Records' A&R chief Larry Hanby during her "country punk" phase, and as such shared the stage with such well-known bands as Black Flag, The Circle Jerks and Los Lobos. But it was when she turned her efforts to kick-ass blues in the style of Big Mama Thornton and Etta James that she realized she'd found her forte. To date, Kane has had released over a dozen albums; has had her music appear in the TV shows Hidden Palms, Strong Medicine and The Chris Isaak Show and the movies The Girl Next Door and Heavy; and is currently appearing in her own autobiographical musical show, The Toughest Girl Alive, in New York City.
"If you are music fan, a sex positive feminist, porn fan, big woman or someone who just wants an evening of pure talent and joy... See Candye Kane's show this week," wrote adult actress and TG schoolmistress Veronica Vera.
Once a regular at Big Top Video, for whom she did most of her adult work, Kane made 17 adult movies altogether during her 15 year stint in porn (1983-1998), including Going Down for VCA, and Huge Bras 2 and 4 for Western Visuals. She also appeared in over 150 adult magazine layouts, and was even briefly a columnist for Gent. On average, she spends 250 days per year touring worldwide on the blues music circuit.
