- A brawl that broke out around midnight at Club Wizzards in University City left one man dead and another critically injured from gunshot wounds, reported the Philadelphia Inquirer
When the fight erupted among five men at the club, the disc jockey attempted to break it up, only to have them all turn on him. Some of the men reportedly left the club at that point, and at least one of them returned with a gun.
Witnesses flagged down campus police, who are state-certified officers with sidearms, and advised them that one of the combatants was armed. According to Maureen Rush, vice president of the university's Office of Public Safety, the officers heard gunshots fired as they entered the club and saw the d.j. fall to the floor.
The officers proceeded to identify themselves as police and order the gunman several times to drop his weapon. When he refused, one of the officers shot him twice. The gunman was pronounced dead on the scene. The d.j., who was shot once in the chest and once in the right thigh, remains in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was identified as a 31-year-old man, but neither his name nor that of the gunman has been released.
Two people who attempted to flee the scene were apprehended, and may face conspiracy charges related to the shooting of the d.j. and the gunman's death.
Hours after the shooting, officials from the city's Department of Licenses & Inspections posted a "Cease to Operate" order on the club, closing it down until a hearing overturns the order.
