LOS ANGELES - In 1989, two emerging stars made their debuts at Catalina Video: Chi Chi LaRue and Joey Stefano. On Feb. 5, their classic collaboration will be re-released on DVD.
Ironically, the prolific LaRue - whose name today is a household word - almost became famous as someone else. Initially, Catalina's bosses wanted him to use the name "Taylor Hudson" out of concern consumers wouldn't respond well to a feminine name on the box cover. His list of hit films includes
Link: The Evolution, Steele Ranger, In Gear, 2nd Gear, Oral Exams, Detention, Bolt and
Wrong Side of the Tracks (parts 1 and 2).
Stefano, who went on to become one of the most popular models of the 20th century. Though many of his movies are out of print and no longer available, LaRue's
Channel 1 Releasing - which acquired Catalina Video last year - found the master for
Billboard in the company's archives.
Stefano died of an overdose in 1994 at the age of 26.
In addition to Stefano, LaRue is credited with discovering Zak Spears, Hal Rockland, Spike, Joey Hart, Doug Jeffries, Caesar, Matt Summers, Johnny Hazzard and Eddie Stone.
Billboard is only one of the classic Catalina titles Channel 1 plans to re-master and release. Also on the schedule are
French Lieutenant's Boys, Big Guns, The Bite, In Hot Pursuit, Leo & Lance, Powertool, Sailor in the Wild, Jawbreaker and
Motel California.Billboard stars Stefano, Adam Grant, Andrew Michaels, Chris Ramsey, Chris Stone, Dusty, Lon Flexx, Michael Moore and Vic Summers. DVD extras include "Pop Shot on Demand" and the "Wrap It Up" public service announcement promoting safer sex.
